So what is castile soap exactly? Olive oil was probably one of the first non-animal-based oils used to make soap. Castile Soap is reputed to have originated in Castile Castle as early as 1567. Castile soap is a vegetable soap traditionally made from 100% pure olive oil, water, and lye. Therefore, it is a vegan product because it does not include the addition of animal fats as some other soaps might. Because this soap contains only 1 oil - olive oil - many believe that the lather is less than what they are used to from a combination of different oils. And they're right - at least initially. Most handmade soaps must age at least 6 weeks to fully cure (tho at Shiloh Soaps we age ALL our soaps at least 8 full weeks before being sold to ensure that you're getting a fully cured, great lathering soap). Castile soap however, doesn't lather well until it cures AT LEAST 6-9 months. that's right - months! As the soap ages, the olives oil lather becomes truely remarkable. that is why we sell our Castile soap only after aging 1 full YEAR in order to obtain the best possible lather for you!
